The Handsome Furs - “Repatriated”
Sometimes I wish my life was a John Hughes movie. I want to get the girl and ride off into the sunset while some cheesy 80s pop song soundtracks my oh-so-beautiful teenage life.
I guess I’m not alone either. The Handsome Furs’ latest single, “Repatriated,” sounds straight out of the end credits of a Hughes film. With buzzing synthesizers likely influenced by M83’s similarly retro Saturdays = Youth, Dan Boeckner seems to know exactly when to utilize a wave of buzzing synth to propel the song forward. And then there’s that voice; Boeckner’s nearly faux-British accent sounds just enough like Robert Smith to create a rushing sense of fleeting youth and crushing nostalgia.
If there’s one really great thing about music in general, it’s the ability to romanticize the past. Every bygone era of music continues to breathe in evolved forms today. Surf rock will never die. Neither will psychedelic rock. And with a song like "Repatriated," the 80s can feel infinite too.
